1) Telephone Service Installation There are two telecommunication companies, Korea Telecom (http://www.kt.co.kr) and Hanaro Telecom (http://www.hanaro.com). You can apply for a telephone at either Korea Telecom or Hanaro by dialing 100 or 106, respectively. There are no special differences in subscription between the two companies, though Korea Telecom was originally the national phone company and provides services through its network built up throughout the country, while Hanaro serves mostly the larger cities only. You can make online applications at either company through the internet. Required documents for a new subscription include passport, alien registration certificate and copy of account statement. In general, a telephone will be installed within a day of application.
Public Phones You can easily find public telephones anywhere in populated or business areas. There are three types: coin-operated phones, card phones, and credit card (deferred payment) phones. Local calls cost 70 won for three minutes; inter-city calls within Korea are higher but not particularly expensive. Coin phones return the coins that were inserted but not used, but do not return change for partially used 100 won coins. Some coin phones are not public - they are usually encased in hard colored plastic (blue, orange or pink )
2) Telephone Cards Use telephone cards when making international calls or inter-city calls, because such calls are subtracted from your telephone card billed in 1,000-won increments. Telephone cards come in 3,000 and 5,000 and 10,000 won denominations; you can buy them in any convenient stores close to telephone boxes or in banks and post offices. Larger denominations are slightly discounted (i.e. a 10,000 won card for 9,500 won).
3) Credit Card Telephones You can also make international or local calls using credit cards issued by Korean bank companies or telecommunication companies. The fare is charged to your credit card.
